MODFLOW 2000 - Methods and Guidelines for Effective Model Calibration

    File Size: 518307 bytes
    File Date: Fri Jan 3 11:42:40 2003

This PDF technical document describes methods and guidelines for model calibration using inverse modeling. The inverse modeling and statistical methods discussed are broadly applicable, but are presented as implemented in the computer programs UCODE and MODFLOWP. UCODE and MODFLOWP perform inverse modeling by calculating parameter values that minimize a weighted least-squares objective function using nonlinear regression. Minimization is accomplished using a modified Gauss-Newton method, and prior or direct information on estimated parameters can be included in the regression. Inverse modeling in many fields is plagued by problems of instability and nonuniqueness, and obtaining useful results depends on:

    1. defining a tractable inverse problem using simplifications appropriate to the system under investigation and
    2. wise use of statistics generated using calculated sensitivities and the match between observed and simulated values, and associated graphical analyses

Fourteen guidelines presented in this work suggest ways of constructing and calibrating models of complex systems such that the resulting model is as accurate and useful as possible.

MODFLOW 2000 - User Guide to Observation, Sensitivity, Parameter-Estimation Processes, and Three Post-Processing Programs

    File Size: 591726 bytes
    File Date: Fri Jan 3 11:48:08 2003

This PDF technical document describes the Observation, Sensitivity, and Parameter-Estimation Processes of the groundwater modeling computer program MODFLOW 2000. The Observation Process generates model-calculated values for comparison with measured, or observed, quantities. A variety of statistics is calculated to quantify this comparison, including a weighted least-squares objective function. In addition, a number of files are produced that can be used to compare the values graphically. The Sensitivity Process calculates the sensitivity of hydraulic heads throughout the model with respect to specified parameters using the accurate sensitivity-equation method. These are called grid sensitivities. If the Observation Process is active, it uses the grid sensitivities to calculate sensitivities for the simulated values associated with the observations. These are called observation sensitivities. Observation sensitivities are used to calculate a number of statistics that can be used to diagnose inadequate data, to identify parameters that probably cannot be estimated by regression using the available observations, and to evaluate the utility of proposed new data.

MODFLOW 2000 - Documentation of the Hydrogeologic-Unit Flow Package

    File Size: 555149 bytes
    File Date: Fri Jan 3 11:43:50 2003

This PDF technical document describes the Hydrogeologic-Unit Flow (HUF) Package for the groundwater modeling computer program MODFLOW 2000. The HUF Package is an alternative internal flow package that allows the vertical geometry of the system hydrogeology to be defined explicitly within the model using hydrogeologic units that can be different than the definition of the model layers. The HUF Package works with all the processes of MODFLOW 2000. For the Groundwater Flow Process, the HUF Package calculates effective hydraulic properties for the model layers based on the hydraulic properties of the hydrogeologic units, which are defined by the user using parameters. The hydraulic properties are used to calculate the conductance coefficients and other terms needed to solve the groundwater flow equation. The sensitivity of the model to the parameters defined within the HUF Package input file can be calculated using the Sensitivity Process, using observations defined with the Observation Process. Optimal values of the parameters can be estimated by using the Parameter-Estimation Process. The HUF Package is nearly identical to the Layer-Property Flow (LPF) Package, the major difference being the definition of the vertical geometry of the system hydrogeology. Use of the HUF Package is illustrated in two test cases, which also serve to verify the performance of the package by showing that the Parameter-Estimation Process produces the true parameter values when exact observations are used.

MODFLOW 2000 - User Guide to the Link - AMG (LMG) Package for Solving Matrix Equations Using an Algebraic Multigrid Solver

    File Size: 806362 bytes
    File Date: Fri Jan 3 11:44:34 2003

This PDF technical document describes the Link-AMG (LMG) Package that links MODFLOW 2000 to an algebraic multigrid (AMG) solver for matrix equations. The LMG Package has some distinct advantages over other solvers available with MODFLOW 2000 for problems with large grids (more than about 40,000 cells) and (or) a highly variable hydraulic-conductivity field. Experience has indicated that, in such problems, execution times using the AMG solver are typically about 2 to 25 times faster than execution times using MODFLOW’s PCG2 Package with the modified incomplete Cholesky preconditioner. The drawback to the AMG method used in LMG is the relatively large amount of computer memory required. In problems simulated for this work, the AMG solver used typically required 3 to 8 times more memory than PCG2. For one 465,600-node problem, for example, 151 megabytes (MB) of memory were required when the LMG package was used, whereas PCG2 required 47 MB of memory. The execution time, however, decreased from 942 seconds to 50 seconds, so there is a clear trade-off between execution time and memory requirements. On modern computers, such memory requirements are becoming increasingly attainable.

MODFLOW 2000 - User Guide to the LMT6 Package, The Linkage with MT3DMS for Multi-Species Mass Transport Modeling

    File Size: 3711908 bytes
    File Date: Fri Jan 3 11:47:38 2003

MODFLOW 2000 is a computer program that numerically solves the three-dimensional ground-water flow equation for a porous medium using a finite-difference method. MT3DMS is a computer program for modeling multi-species solute transport in three-dimensional groundwater systems using multiple solution techniques, including the finite-difference method, the method of characteristics (MOC), and the total-variation-diminishing (TVD) method. This PDF technical document describes a new version of the Link-MT3DMS Package, which enables MODFLOW 2000 to produce the information needed by MT3DMS, and also discusses new visualization software for MT3DMS. Unlike the Link-MT3D Package that coordinated previous versions of MODFLOW and MT3D, the new Link-MT3DMS Package requires an input file that, among other things, provides enhanced support for additional MODFLOW sink/source packages and allows list-directed format for the flow model produced flow-transport link file.

This PDF technical document contains four parts:

    1. documentation of the Link-MT3DMS Package Version 6 for MODFLOW 2000
    2. discussion of several issues related to simulation setup and input data preparation for running MT3DMS with MODFLOW 2000
    3. description of two test example problems, with comparison to results obtained using another MODFLOW-based transport program
    4. overview of post-simulation visualization and animation using the U.S. Geological Survey’s Model Viewer.

    User's Guide for MODPATH/MODPATH-PLOT, Version 3

    File Size: 817156 bytes
    File Date: Fri Jan 3 12:03:00 2003

This PDF technical document describes MODPATH/MODPATH-PLOT. MODPATH is intended for general use and may have to be modified by the user for specific applications. The methods used by MODPATH are based on specific assumptions that result in limitations that must be thoroughly understood to obtain meaningful results.

MODPATH is a particle tracking post-processing package that was developed to compute three dimensional flow paths using output from steady-state or transient groundwater flow simulations by MODFLOW. The particle tracking package consists of two FORTRAN computer codes:

    1. MODPATH, which calculates particle paths
    2. MODPATH-PLOT, which displays results graphically

    File Date: Fri Jan 3 13:05:02 2003

This PDF technical document describes UTCHEM, a three-dimensional chemical flooding simulator. The solution scheme for UTCHEM is analogous to IMPES, where pressure is solved for implicitly, but concentrations rather than saturations are then solved for explicitly. Phase saturations and concentrations are then solved in a flash routine. An energy balance equation is solved explicitly for reservoir temperature. The energy balance equation includes heat flow between the reservoir and the over- and under-burden rocks.

    T-PROGS: Transition Probability Geostatistical Software

    File Size: 1092559 bytes
    File Date: Fri Jan 3 13:02:10 2003

Transition Probability Geostatistical Software (T-PROGS) is a set of FORTRAN computer programs that implements a transition probability/Markov approach to geostatistical analysis and simulation of spatial distributions of categorical variables (e.g., geologic units, facies). Implementation of T-PROGS involves three main steps:

    • calculation of transition probability measurements
    • modeling spatial variability with Markov chains
    • conditional simulation.

These steps are accomplished by the following programs:

    • GAMEAS computes bivariate statistics (e.g., transition probability, indicator cross-variogram, etc.).
    • MCMOD develops one- and three-dimensional Markov chain models of spatial variability.
    • TSIM generates three-dimensional, cross-correlated conditional simulations.

The transition probability/Markov approach was developed to facilitate incorporation of geologic interpretation and improve consideration for spatial cross-correlations in the development of geostatistical models.

The input data for SSM is package is also identical to MT3D-MS SSM package, except in RT3Dv2-SSM package an additional boundary condition designated as the decaying constant source boundary condition is supported. The input data structure for RCT file is almost identical to RT3Dv1-RCT data structure, except in version-2 three new solver options are included and also the sorption parameters can be specified on a cell-by-cell basis. The differences between MT3M-MS SSM and RT3Dv2-SSM input files, and the differences between RT3Dv1-RCT and RT3Dv2-RCT input files are described in this document.

RT3D - General Solution to Multi-Species Transport Equations Coupled with a First-Order Reaction Network

    File Size: 203867 bytes
    File Date: Fri Jan 3 11:42:10 2003

This PDF technical document presents a generalized solution methodology for deriving analytical solutions to multi-species transport equations coupled with multi-parent, serial, parallel, converging, diverging, and/or reversible first-order reactions. The method is flexible for solving one-, two-, or three-dimensional advection-dispersion equations that are coupled with a set of first-order reactions. However, a major limitation is that the method cannot be used for solving multi-species transport equations with different retardation factors. Mathematical steps are provided to illustrate how the general solution method can be derived using linear transformation principles, and to show why the method would fail when the retardation factors are different. The results of the presented solution scheme for a test problem compare well against the numerical solution computed using the RT3D transport code. The proposed methodology is particularly useful for developing simple analytical models that can be used to perform screening simulations and be used to test complex multi-species transport codes.

One of the most important steps in defining a MODFLOW model is to define the layer data (stratigraphy). In most cases, it is more appropriate to use the 2D geostatistical tools in GMS to smoothly interpolate layer geometries and then use the Data Calculator to compute geometry-based parameters such as transmissivity. The steps involved in defining layer data in this fashion are described in this document.

The U.S. Geological Survey Modular groundwater Flow Model, commonly referred to as MODFLOW, simulates groundwater flow through porous media using the finite-difference method. The region being modeled is divided into a grid of cells, and each cell is defined to be either no-flow, variable-head, or constant-head. The model calculates a value for head at all variable-head cells whereas head at constant-head cells is specified by the user.

This report presents a new method of simulating transient leakage from confining units using the U.S. Geological Survey Modular Finite-Difference groundwater Flow Model. Transient leakage into or out of a compressible fine-grained confining unit results from groundwater storage changes within the unit. The importance of fine-grained units in analyses of transient groundwater flow is not always recognized. The new method of simulating transient leakage in the Modular Finite-Difference groundwater Flow Model is referred to as the Transient-Leakage Package, version 1, or the TLK1 Package. The TLK1 Package solves integrodifferential equations that describe the flow components across the upper and lower boundaries of confining units.

The MODFLOW manual is difficult at best, but does state that CCF values are volumetric flow per time (e.g., m3/day). Based on simulations, it really represents the (volumetric flow porosity) per time. That matches with MODPATH and MT3D/RT3D results.

This report documents the USGS Eulerian-Lagrangian Localized Adjoint Method (ELLAM) algorithm that solves an integral form of the solute-transport equation, incorporating an implicit-in-time difference approximation for the dispersive and sink terms. Like the algorithm in the original version of the USGS MOC3D transport model, ELLAM uses a method of characteristics approach to solve the transport equation on the basis of velocity field. The ELLAM algorithm is based on an integral formulation of conservation of mass and uses appropriate numerical techniques to obtain global conservation of mass. The implicit procedure eliminates several stability criteria required for an explicit formulation. Consequently, ELLAM allows large transport time increments to be used. ELLAM can produce qualitatively good results using a small number of transport time steps.

    File Date: Thu Aug 1 12:56:05 2002

This report documents an extension to the USGS MOC3D transport model that incorporates an implicit-in-time difference approximation for the dispersive transport equation, including source/sink terms. The original MOC3D transport model (Version 1) uses the method of characteristics to solve the transport equation on the basis of the velocity field. The original MOC3D solution algorithm incorporates particle tracking to represent advective processes and an explicit finite-difference formulation to calculate dispersive fluxes. The new implicit procedure eliminates several stability criteria required for the previous explicit formulation. This allows much larger transport time increments to be used in dispersion-dominated problems. The decoupling of advective and dispersive transport in MOC3D, however, is unchanged. With the implicit extension, the MOC3D model is upgraded to Version 2.

This report presents MOC3D, a model that simulates three-dimensional solute transport in flowing ground water. It includes a description of the theoretical basis of the model, a detailed description of input requirements and output options, and the results of model testing and evaluation. The model was evaluated for several problems for which exact analytical solutions are available and by benchmarking against other numerical codes for selected complex problems for which no exact solutions are available. These test results indicate that the model is very accurate for a wide range of conditions and yields minimal numerical dispersion for advection-dominated problems. Mass-balance errors are generally less than 10 percent, and tend to decrease and stabilize with time.

Download Estimating Areas Contributing Recharge to Wells (PDF File)

    File Size: 999398 bytes
    File Date: Fri Aug 23 10:39:50 2002

About one-third of the population of the United States obtains drinking water from public-supply systems that rely on ground water. Because of the large number of resource planners, and the public are concerned about the quality of ground water pumped by public-supply wells. Most human-derived contaminants in ground water are related to activities at the land surface and enter the ground water flow system at the water table after passing through the unsaturated zone. A second important location of contaminant entry, which is of much smaller areal extent than the water table, is the beds and banks of streams, reservoirs, lakes, and wetlands. Given that most human-derived contaminants enter the ground water flow system directly or indirectly from the land surface, one approach for protecting public ground water supplies is to estimate areas contributing recharge to public-supply wells and then to implement ground water protection practices on the overlying land surface.

This report provides a brief review of selected concepts, assumptions, and uncertainties related to estimating areas contributing recharge to wells. Emphasis is on estimating contributing areas by numerical simulation and on what has been learned from previous studies by the USGS using this approach.

BioChlor for 3-D is a FORTRAN utility package that solves a set of coupled partial differential equations to describe the reactive transport of chlorinated solvent species, such as PCE, TCE, DCE, VC and ETH, in saturated groundwater systems. The equations solved and the methods used are identical to those used in the AFCEE screening tool BIOCHLOR (Newell et al. 1998).

This utility package was specifically developed to complement the use of BIOCHLOR model for multi-dimensional applications. The main advantage of BC3D is that the code is conveniently interfaced with GMS, which help visualize true two- or three-dimensional plume patterns. The current version of BC3D depends exclusively on GMS to post-process output concentration distributions.

    Download GMS DEM Utility v2.0
    File Size: 82782 bytes
    File Date: Tue Nov 4 02:10:28 1997

This program will read in an ASCII data file (for example, DEM or Digital Elevation Map files) that consists of XYZ coordinates. The program will cut the XYZ coordinate file up into a user-defined rectangular section. It will read in the XYZ data, then ask the user what range for X & Y is desired. The program will then create a new ASCII data file based on the inputted range.

The user can choose to create files that GMS can read. This includes 3D scatter, scalar, and TIN files. The headers are automatically written to the new file so that it can be immediately imported into GMS without any conversion or editing.

The FORTRAN source code is included with this program.
